History

We have been building in this community for over 60 years.

In 1945 Fred Black, who came to South Bend before World War II to work for the Studebaker Corporation, founded the company. Vern Casteel grew up helping his father with contracting jobs, laboring and managing a variety of projects. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1957. He worked for Desota B. McCabe and Associates as a Consulting Engineer, then joined J.L. Simmons Co. of Chicago, the oldest general contractor in the country. In South Bend, he joined Hickey Construction as Vice President of Engineering and Estimating. In 1968 he joined Fred Black Construction and completed the purchase of the company seven years later.

Honorable is the first word Vern uses to describe the values of the company. These values have made the Casteel reputation synonymous with good business. Under Vern’s leadership, the company has completed some of its largest public and institutional work. Meanwhile, our expertise in smaller commercial projects has also grown. Most of the Casteel team of experienced estimators and project managers have worked with Vern for decades.

Today two of Vern’s children are moving the company into the future. Tom began working for the company as a teenager over twenty years ago, and Holly joined him several years after completing her engineering degree. With integrity as its foundation, hard work and new ideas, Casteel Construction Corp. continues to make history.
